World Patient Safety Day 2022: Current Theme, Slogan, History, Objectives and Celebration - KV DAPPAR LIBRARY

It is observed on September 17 to create understanding globally

about patient safety, increase public engagement in health care safety, etc.

Every person around the world will, at some point in their life, take

medications to prevent or treat illness. However, medications

sometimes cause serious harm if incorrectly stored, prescribed,

dispensed, administered or if monitored insufficiently.

Unsafe medication practices and medication errors are a leading

cause of avoidable harm in health care across the world.

Medication errors occur when weak medication systems and

human factors such as fatigue, poor environmental conditions

or staff shortages affect the safety of the medication use process.

This can result in severe patient harm, disability and even death.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has significantly exacerbated

the risk of medication errors and associated medication-related

harm. It is in this context that ‘Medication Safety’ has been

selected as the theme for World Patient Safety Day 2022,

with the slogan ‘Medication Without Harm’.

The global campaign reaffirms the objectives of the

WHO Global Patient Safety Challenge: Medication Without Harm

launched by WHO in 2017. The campaign calls on stakeholders

to prioritize and take early action in key areas associated with

significant patient harm due to unsafe medication practices.

These include high-risk situations, transitions of care,

polypharmacy (concurrent use of multiple medications)

and look-alike, sound-alike medications. The campaign will

provide a special focus on the implications of the COVID-19

pandemic for medication safety, considering the serious

disruption in the provision of health services.

World Patient Safety Day is one of WHO’s global public health days.

It was established in 2019 by the Seventy-second World Health

Assembly through the adoption of resolution WHA72.6 –

“Global action on patient safety”. Its objectives are to

increase public awareness and engagement, enhance

global understanding, and work towards global solidarity

and action by Member States to enhance patient safety and

reduce patient harm.

Objectives of World Patient Safety Day 2022:

  1. RAISE global awareness of the high burden of medication-related
  2.  harm due to medication errors and unsafe practices, and
  3. ADVOCATE urgent action to improve medication safety.
  4. ENGAGE key stakeholders and partners in the efforts to
  5. prevent medication errors and reduce medication-related harm.
  6. EMPOWER patients and families to be actively involved in the
  7. safe use of medication.
  8. SCALE UP implementation of the WHO Global Patient Safety
  9. Challenge: Medication Without Harm.

Commemorating World Patient Safety Day 2022

To observe the day, WHO is organizing a series of webinars

on medication safety and is producing a number of medication

safety solutions and technical products in 2022. On and around

17 September 2022, WHO will organize a wide range of

activities and host a global virtual event. Celebrations will

include lighting up of Geneva’s Jet d’Eau in orange colour.

Member States and partners are invited to participate in

the global campaign by pledging to implement the

WHO Global Patient Safety Challenge: Medication Without Harm,

organizing activities, holding events and lighting up iconic

monuments in orange in support of medication safety.

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer ( CELEBRATED ON 16 SEPTEMBER EVERY YEAR )- Library KV Dappar

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

The United Nations' (UN) International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated on September 16 every year. This event commemorates the date of the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1987.

What Do People Do?

On this day primary and secondary school educators throughout the world organize classroom activities that focus on topics related to the ozone layer, climate change and ozone depletion. Some teachers use educational packages from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) that have been specifically tailored to address topics about the Earth's ozone layer.

Other activities that are organized by different community groups, individuals, schools and local organizations across the world include: the promotion of ozone-friendly products; special programs and events on saving the ozone layer; the distribution of the UNEP's public awareness posters to be used for events centered on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer; and the distribution of awards to those who worked hard to protect the Earth's ozone layer.

Public Life

The UN's International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is a global observance and not a public holiday.

Background

In 1987 representatives from 24 countries met in Montreal and announced to the world that it was time to stop destroying the ozone layer. In so doing, these countries committed themselves, via the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, to rid the world of substances that threaten the ozone layer.

On December 19, 1994, the UN General Assembly proclaimed September 16 to be the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date when the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed in 1987. The day was first celebrated on September 16, 1995.

Symbols

Many promotional items used for the day feature images of the Sun, sky, or earth's natural environment to represent the ozone's importance in protecting the environment. Selected winning paintings from the 1998 Children’s Painting Competition, which was part of UNEP’s public awareness campaign at the time, have since been reproduced on posters, calendars, publications, and other material.

Engineer's day 2022 - ( 15.09.2022 ) - KV Dappar

Engineer’s day 2022:

Every year India celebrates National Engineer’s day

on September 15 to recognize and honour the

achievements of the great engineer Mokshagundam

 Visvesvaraya. Along with India, Visvesvaraya’s

great works are also celebrated in Sri Lanka and

Tanzania on September 15 as Engineer’s day.

Born on September 15, 1861, in the Muddenahalli

village of Karnataka, Visvesvaraya completed his

school education in his hometown and later on

went to study Bachelor of Arts (BA) at the

University of Madras. He then switched to a

different career path and pursued a diploma

in civil engineering at the College of

Science in Pune.

Popularly known as Sir MV, he undertook

several complex projects and delivered remarkable

infrastructural results during his engineering career.

He patented and installed an irrigation system with

water floodgates at the Khadakvasla reservoir near

Pune to raise the food supply level and storage to

the highest levels known as ‘block system’ in 1903.

The irrigation system was later installed at

 Gwalior’s Tigra Dam and Mysuru’s

Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS) dam, the latter of which

created one of the largest reservoirs in

 Asia at the time.

Apart from his contributions in the field of

engineering, he was also called the “precursor

of economic planning in India”, according to the

Institution of Engineers India (IEI). His books,

 “Reconstructing India” and “Planned Economy

of India” were published in 1920 and 1934,

respectively. He was awarded knight in 1915

while serving as the Diwan of Mysore, and

received Bharat Ratna in 1955.

In 2018, Google launched a Doodle on his

birthday to celebrate his genius works whose

endeavors led to the Tata Steel engineers inventing

an armored vehicle that was used in WWII and

could withstand bullets. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya

passed away in 1962.
